This page: Learn how to conjugate -ir verbs in present tense. Learn common regular -ir verbs.
Grammar Lesson
The verb abrir (to open) has been conjugated in the table below as an example of a regular present tense -ir verb. The -ir at the end of the infinitive form of the verb is dropped and the ending (in red letters in the table) is added.
Subject pronouns | Form of abrir | English translation |
---|---|---|
yo | abro | I open |
tú | abres | you open |
usted, él, ella | abre | you open/he open/she open |
nosotros, nosotras | abrimos | we open |
vosotros, vosotras | abrís | you open (used in Spain only) |
ustedes, ellos, ellas | abren | you open/they open |
Note: Remember that the subject pronoun doesn't necessarily have to be used in a sentence if it is clear who the subject is based on the context or verb form. For example, with the verb abro, it is obvious that the subject is yo so the subject is generally not used. The subject may still be used, however, for emphasis.
Notice that some of the endings for -ir verbs are the same as for -er verbs. Only the nosotros and vosotros forms are different.
Here are some other common regular -ir verbs. Click on the verbs in the table below to hear the pronunciation and repeat.
